Chef + Traveler
Bill Menard is a recovering attorney who left private practice in Washington, DC over a decade ago to pursue his passion for all things Italian. With his wife, Suzy, they founded Bella Italia in 2003, a retail store in Bethesda, Maryland that specialized in artisinal products from Italy, including gourmet foods, hand painted ceramics and luxury housewares. In 2014, they relocated and rebranded, and are now Via Umbria in Georgetown, D.C. Bill and Suzy travel to Italy frequently to find new products to import and to broaden their understanding and appreciation for the Italian culture and lifestyle. In 2008 they purchased a villa in Umbria, just outside the village of Cannara, as a rental property. Those in search of la dolce vita should visit Via Umbria at 1525 Wisconsin Ave NW, or www.viaumbria.com.

Carnevale 006Just about two years ago, as Suzy and I were finalizing our plans for our trip to Germany to pick up our new car, we faced an unusual situation.  How to spend a couple of weeks between Munich and our villa in Cannara where we had a few commitments planned.  We had already drawn up the broad outlines of the trip – a few days in Germany followed by our first visit to the northern Italian region of Trentino.  From Trento we were going to head east to the Veneto and visit Treviso (too many “T” towns for Suzy) and then work our way down the Adriatic coast before landing home in Umbria.  We were, after all, buying a new car and wanted to give it a good workout. 2012 – The Italian Year in Review

Buon Anno 003In keeping (innkeeping?) with the season, this month’s “featured city” is not a city at all, but rather a look back at our Italian travel during 2012.  And our “Italian Memories” travel anecdote is not a single, heartwarming tale but rather a montage of our 2012 experiences.   So sit back and enjoy and end of year “best of” collection.  And let’s hope 2013 turns out to be as interesting, exciting and eye opening as last year.
